Why are people drawn to experiences like ceremonies, trance dancing, drumming, hypnosis, and even psychedelics? These are non-ordinary states of consciousness associated with theta rhythm in our brains and potentially disrupt our usual habits of thought and self-perception. The psychiatrist, Milton Erickson, said that hypnosis was not about getting people into trance but getting them out of the trance they were already in. Non-ordinary states increase the activity of certain parts of the story brain while reducing the connectivity of the whole circuit, allowing us greater ease to see ourselves differently. Following some theory, Barbara Mainguy and I will discuss how we use non-ordinary states in our clinical practice, including all of the above except for psychedelics. We will discuss psychedelics and how they are being used clinically and will conclude with a discussion of the power of Indigenous ceremonies for changing states of consciousness. It is through non-ordinary experiences that people transform.
